Trump imposes 10 percent global tariff after court

Published on: February 21, 2026 10:00 PM

Washington: Following the US Supreme Court’s decision striking down his tariff measures, President Donald Trump announced a 10 percent global tariff on all countries. The move aims to maintain trade leverage while bypassing the court’s restrictions. The new tariff affects international trade and all existing agreements.

Trump signed an executive order enforcing the 10 percent global tariff immediately. He emphasized that all prior trade agreements remain valid but the implementation method has changed. The decision reflects the administration’s intent to continue protecting US economic interests.

The president criticized the Supreme Court ruling as “shameful” and claimed some judges are influenced by foreign interests and political opponents. He insisted the tariff measure is necessary to safeguard American industries. Trump’s statement signaled a confrontational approach to judicial oversight.

Meanwhile, US Vice President J.D. Vance described the Supreme Court decision as unlawful. He said the ruling clearly violates existing laws and undermines executive authority over trade policy. Officials expect heightened political and trade tensions internationally.

Analysts note that the global 10 percent tariff could impact imports, exports, and multinational companies. Market observers are monitoring reactions from trade partners and potential retaliatory measures. The policy underscores ongoing challenges in US trade governance and global economic relations.
