Pakistan discovers biggest oil and gas reserves in Kohat 2026

Published on: March 5, 2026 3:49 PM

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced a major discovery of oil and gas reserves in Kohat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, calling it the largest find of 2026. The company stated that the discovery represents a significant milestone for Pakistan’s energy sector and could boost domestic production considerably.

According to a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, OGDCL confirmed that the Kohat reserves are the biggest in the country this year. Officials described the find as a crucial development that strengthens local energy resources and offers promising prospects for future exploration and extraction.

The discovery is expected to help reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuel if the reserves are developed effectively. Energy experts believe that successful development could stabilise supply, improve energy security, and contribute to economic growth by supporting domestic industries and power generation.

Further technical assessments and testing of the well are currently underway to determine the exact size and production potential of the reserves. Authorities indicated that detailed reports regarding estimated output and extraction timelines would be released once evaluations are completed.

OGDCL emphasised that the discovery marks a turning point for the country’s oil and gas exploration initiatives. Officials highlighted that continuous investment in exploration and technology is essential to fully realise the potential of newly identified reserves and meet growing energy demand.

The company also stated that strategic development of the Kohat reserves could create jobs, enhance regional infrastructure, and attract further investment in Pakistan’s energy sector. Authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring sustainable and efficient utilisation of these valuable resources.
