Speaking to the media, Shehzad said that global petroleum prices have surged due to geopolitical tensions, and Pakistan has not been immune to this trend. The government initially delayed domestic price hikes in anticipation of a potential end to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. However, as the situation remained unresolved, adjustments in fuel prices became unavoidable.
He emphasized that oil-producing countries have also raised fuel prices, which has contributed to a global rise in energy costs. Despite limited resources, the Pakistani government has attempted to manage the impact on the public, including a zero petroleum levy on diesel to shield transport and industrial sectors.
Regarding the motorcyclist subsidy, Shehzad explained that provincial authorities have shared data on registered motorcycles. Citizens can use a dedicated mobile application to check their eligibility for the program. The initiative aims to prioritize assistance for low-income riders, ensuring that the relief reaches those most in need.

He further noted that owners of heavy bikes are likely to afford fuel at market rates, and hence, will not be included under the subsidy program. The government will use existing social welfare databases, including the Benazir Income Support Program, to accurately identify eligible beneficiaries.
The advisor stressed that the targeted approach seeks to provide meaningful support while keeping public finances sustainable amid historic increases in petroleum prices. Pakistanis are being encouraged to verify their status through the official application before expecting subsidy benefits.
