Russia announces Victory Day ceasefire for May 8–9

Published on: May 5, 2026 9:10 PM

Russia has announced a temporary ceasefire on May 8–9 to mark Victory Day celebrations. The move was ordered by President Vladimir Putin and comes amid ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The decision has heightened diplomatic and military tensions in the region.

The Russian Defense Ministry warned that any Ukrainian attacks during the ceasefire would trigger a strong retaliatory response. It said Moscow would carry out large-scale strikes if Kyiv disrupted the holiday period. Authorities also urged civilians in Kyiv and foreign diplomats to leave the city.

Ukraine said it had not received any official ceasefire request from Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine would implement its own ceasefire starting May 5–6 midnight. Both sides continue to exchange conflicting statements over coordination.

Military developments also continued alongside ceasefire announcements. Russian sources claimed new territorial gains in several Ukrainian regions over the past week. Meanwhile, Ukraine reported expanded long-range strikes targeting areas inside Russia and Crimea.

The situation remains highly volatile despite temporary truce declarations. Analysts say both sides are using ceasefire announcements alongside ongoing military pressure. The international community is closely monitoring developments during the Victory Day period.
