Trump praises King Charles after earlier criticism shifts tone

Published on: May 5, 2026 6:22 PM

Donald Trump shifted his tone toward King Charles III, calling him “the greatest King” during a recent high-profile meeting, marking a notable change from his earlier critical remarks. The exchange followed a diplomatic State Visit that highlighted warmer relations between the two leaders on an international stage.

During the latest engagement, both leaders appeared relaxed and exchanged friendly remarks, with Trump repeatedly describing the monarch as “fantastic” while acknowledging the positive atmosphere of their discussions. The meeting drew attention for its unexpectedly cordial tone, contrasting earlier reports of tension and disagreement between the two figures.

Earlier, in 2019, when Charles was still Prince of Wales, he hosted Trump at Clarence House, where the conversation reportedly focused heavily on climate issues. According to accounts referenced in political memoirs, Trump later described the discussion as unproductive, even suggesting he found it uninteresting, while others in his circle noted discomfort during the visit.

Reports also suggested that Melania Trump jokingly remarked that the former president appeared disengaged during the earlier meeting. These accounts contributed to a narrative of strained personal impressions before the more recent shift in tone during their renewed engagement.

In contrast, the latest State Visit included stops across major locations in the United States, where King Charles participated in high-level diplomatic events and addressed international audiences. The visit was widely viewed as a significant moment in his reign, showcasing his role in global diplomacy and strengthening bilateral ties.

Most notably, King Charles delivered a major address to the U.S. Congress, earning multiple standing ovations for his remarks on cooperation, sustainability, and shared global values. The speech reinforced his international profile, while the evolving dynamic with Trump highlighted a notable transformation in their public interactions over time.
