Officials said that cybercriminals are attempting to exploit the system by posing as government representatives and targeting users under the pretext of subsidy registration schemes. The advisory cautioned that fake links and messages are being circulated to steal personal and financial information from consumers.
According to the Power Division spokesperson, some fraudulent schemes involve asking consumers to scan QR codes or click suspicious links, followed by entering personal details and a six-digit verification code. Authorities stressed that this process is not part of any official government procedure.
The spokesperson clarified that only QR codes printed on official electricity bills should be used for registration, and consumers must avoid sharing information on any external websites, messages or unofficial platforms.
Law enforcement agencies have been informed about the ongoing scam attempts and are reportedly monitoring cybercriminal activity targeting vulnerable users across the country.
The government recently introduced the QR-based verification system to streamline subsidy distribution for electricity consumers. The system is designed to ensure that relief is provided transparently to eligible low-income households based on verified usage data.
Authorities emphasised that the initiative does not indicate any withdrawal of subsidies, but rather aims to improve accuracy in identifying deserving consumers. They urged the public not to misunderstand the registration process or fall victim to misinformation being spread online.
Officials also advised citizens to remain cautious and report any suspicious messages or fraudulent links to relevant authorities immediately.
