Shehbaz Sharif praises Trump for advancing crucial Iran peace efforts

Published on: May 24, 2026 2:43 PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated US President Donald Trump on what he described as successful and productive diplomatic efforts aimed at advancing peace in the Middle East. In a statement shared on X, Shehbaz praised Trump for holding an important telephone conversation with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkiye, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Pakistan. The talks focused on reducing regional tensions and pushing forward negotiations linked to the Iran conflict.

Shehbaz Sharif also appreciated the role of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who represented Pakistan during the high-level discussions involving regional and international leaders. The prime minister acknowledged Munir’s continuous diplomatic engagement throughout the peace process and highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to supporting stability in the region. Furthermore, he expressed hope that Pakistan would soon host another important round of negotiations involving key stakeholders.

According to the prime minister, the discussions provided leaders with an opportunity to exchange views on the ongoing regional crisis and possible paths toward lasting peace. Pakistan reiterated its willingness to continue mediation efforts with sincerity while encouraging diplomatic solutions instead of further military escalation in the Middle East. As a result, Islamabad’s role as a mediator in the Iran-related negotiations has gained growing international attention.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump announced that a memorandum of understanding linked to a possible Iran peace agreement was now “largely negotiated” after recent diplomatic progress. Trump said he had completed a “very good call” with leaders from Pakistan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkiye and the United Arab Emirates regarding the emerging framework. He added that the agreement remained subject to final approval by the United States, Iran and participating countries.

Trump also claimed the proposed arrangement could help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route severely affected since the conflict began in February. The closure of the strategic waterway disrupted international energy markets after US and Israeli strikes on Iran triggered wider regional tensions. Consequently, hopes for reopening the Strait of Hormuz have become a major focus of ongoing diplomatic efforts and economic discussions worldwide.

Political observers believe Pakistan’s increasing involvement in regional mediation has strengthened its diplomatic standing at a critical moment for the Middle East. Officials expect future negotiations to continue in the coming days as mediators attempt to secure broader agreements between Iran, the United States and regional powers. Meanwhile, global markets and governments continue monitoring developments closely due to the conflict’s impact on energy supplies and regional security.
