Trump weighs Iran deal as Tehran disputes terms

Trump concludes meeting on potential Iran deal without announcing decision - ABC News

US President Donald Trump said he is nearing a final decision on a potential agreement with Iran aimed at ending tensions linked to the ongoing US-Israeli conflict, while Tehran has pushed back against several claims about the proposed deal and insisted that no final agreement has been reached.

Speaking ahead of a high-level meeting in the White House Situation Room on Friday, Trump said discussions with Iran were progressing and suggested that a deal could address key issues including nuclear activities and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. However, following more than two hours of deliberations, no formal decision was announced.

According to reports, US officials believe negotiations have advanced significantly in recent weeks, with the proposed agreement awaiting Trump’s approval. The discussions come amid heightened regional instability that has affected global energy markets and international trade routes.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei rejected parts of Trump’s characterization of the negotiations, saying exchanges of messages between the two sides were continuing but that no final understanding had been reached. He also emphasized that Iran would not accept demands imposed through pressure, reiterating Tehran’s longstanding position on national sovereignty.

Iran’s Fars News Agency, citing informed sources, described some of Trump’s statements as a “mixture of truth and lies.” The report disputed claims that Iran had agreed to destroy its enriched uranium stockpile or reopen the Strait of Hormuz under the conditions outlined by Washington. Iranian sources also maintained that the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets remains a key issue in the talks.

Claims by US President Donald Trump about a possible agreement with Iran are “a mix of truth and lies” and do not reflect the draft terms being reviewed in Tehran, IRGC-affiliated Fars News reported, citing informed sources.

Meanwhile, tensions persist across the region. Iran warned that vessels from countries it considers hostile could face military action, while military activity continued along the Israel-Lebanon border. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces had expanded operations inside Lebanon, while Hezbollah claimed responsibility for drone attacks targeting northern Israel.
