Govt slashes petrol, diesel prices by Rs22 per litre

Published on: May 30, 2026 11:16 AM

The federal government has announced a major reduction in petroleum prices, lowering both petrol and high-speed diesel rates by Rs22 per litre in a move aimed at providing relief to consumers during Eid holidays.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the price cut reflects the government’s commitment to passing on economic benefits to the public whenever fiscal conditions allow. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said providing relief to citizens remains a top priority and that the latest reduction fulfills a promise made to the nation.

Following the revision, petrol will now be available at Rs381.78 per litre, while high-speed diesel will be sold at Rs380.78 per litre. The new prices took effect immediately after the official announcement.

The government said the reduction comes after similar relief measures introduced earlier and is intended to ease financial pressure on households, transport operators, and businesses. Lower fuel costs are expected to benefit a wide range of sectors, particularly public transportation, goods transport, agriculture, and small-scale commercial activities that depend heavily on fuel consumption.

In its statement, the government highlighted efforts to protect consumers from the impact of fluctuations in international oil markets. Officials noted that authorities have continued to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies and stable distribution across the country despite challenges in global energy markets.

The Prime Minister’s Office also emphasized that previous support measures included subsidies for public transport, freight services, motorcyclists, and rickshaw drivers. According to the statement, the government had earlier absorbed part of the burden created by higher international oil prices to shield consumers from sharp increases in domestic fuel rates.

Economic analysts believe the reduction could help ease transportation costs and provide temporary relief from inflationary pressures, although broader economic conditions and global oil price trends will continue to influence future fuel pricing decisions.
