Iran and US exchange strikes amid ongoing negotiations

Tensions between the United States (US) and Iran escalated again after both sides reported carrying out military strikes against each other, even as diplomatic efforts continue to seek a lasting end to the conflict that began earlier this year.

The US military said it conducted strikes on Iranian military facilities along Iran’s Gulf coast over the weekend. According to the US Central Command, the operation was launched in response to what it described as aggressive Iranian actions, including the reported downing of an American MQ-1 drone operating over international waters.

US officials stated that fighter aircraft targeted Iranian air defence systems, a ground control station and two attack drones that were considered threats to maritime traffic in the region. The military said it remained committed to protecting American personnel, assets and shipping routes.

In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had targeted a US air base used in operations against southern Iran. Iranian authorities did not identify the location of the base.

Meanwhile, reports from Kuwait indicated that air defence systems intercepted missiles and drones after warning sirens sounded in parts of the country. Officials did not immediately provide details regarding the origin of the projectiles.

US President Donald Trump said Iran remained interested in reaching an agreement with Washington despite the latest military exchanges. He expressed optimism that negotiations could eventually produce a deal beneficial to both the United States and its allies.

The latest confrontation comes despite a ceasefire that took effect in April and ongoing negotiations aimed at achieving a more durable settlement. Key issues under discussion include Iran’s nuclear programme, economic sanctions, frozen Iranian assets and regional security concerns.

The broader conflict has also been linked to instability in the region, including tensions involving Hezbollah and military operations in Lebanon. Diplomatic efforts by the United States continue alongside the military exchanges as regional powers seek to prevent further escalation.
