First Hangor-class submarine arrives in Karachi

Pakistan welcomes first Hangor-class submarine built under China defense partnership | Arab News PK

Pakistan Navy’s first Hangor-class submarine, built in China, has arrived in Karachi, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to modernize its maritime defence capabilities.

The arrival of PNS/M Hangor represents a major addition to Pakistan’s naval fleet and is expected to strengthen the country’s ability to safeguard its maritime interests and territorial waters. Defence officials view the development as an important step in enhancing the Navy’s operational readiness and underwater warfare capabilities.

The Hangor-class submarine is equipped with advanced combat systems, modern sensors, sonar and radar technologies, enabling it to operate effectively in complex maritime environments. The vessel also features stealth technology designed to reduce its detectability, allowing it to conduct missions with greater effectiveness and survivability.

One of the submarine’s key features is its Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which enables it to remain submerged for extended periods without surfacing. This capability significantly enhances operational endurance and provides greater flexibility during long-duration missions.

The submarine is also capable of carrying long-range torpedoes and cruise missiles, adding to its strategic and defensive value. Military analysts believe the induction of the platform will contribute to strengthening Pakistan’s deterrence posture in the region.

The Hangor name holds a special place in Pakistan’s naval history. During the 1971 war, the original Hangor submarine gained prominence after sinking the Indian Navy frigate INS Khukri and damaging another vessel, becoming one of the most notable achievements in Pakistan Navy’s operational history.

The new Hangor-class submarine carries forward that legacy while incorporating modern technologies required for contemporary naval operations. Its arrival reflects the ongoing defence cooperation between Pakistan and China and forms part of broader efforts to upgrade Pakistan’s naval assets.

Officials say the submarine will play an important role in enhancing maritime security and supporting the Pakistan Navy’s mission to protect the country’s strategic interests in regional waters.
