Dar defends Indus Waters Treaty framework

Published on: June 18, 2026 10:24 PM

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said responsible states must operate within established legal frameworks instead of abandoning them. He was referring to the Indus Waters Treaty while addressing a seminar on water resources. His remarks highlight Pakistan’s stance on resolving water disputes through legal channels.

Dar said the treaty provides its own mechanism for peaceful dispute resolution. He emphasized that countries should respect agreed international commitments. His comments come amid renewed debate over water-sharing arrangements between Pakistan and India.

He also noted that Pakistan has previously raised concerns over certain actions taken under the treaty framework. However, he stressed that such issues should still be addressed within the treaty’s legal structure. He reiterated the importance of dialogue and institutional processes.

The foreign minister’s remarks reflect Islamabad’s consistent position on maintaining treaty obligations. Pakistan continues to argue that existing agreements must be upheld to ensure regional stability. Officials say adherence to legal frameworks is essential for avoiding escalation.

The address was delivered in a recorded message at a seminar focused on water resource management. The discussion comes at a time when water security remains a key concern for Pakistan’s long-term planning and regional diplomacy.
