WASHINGTON: Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has said Democrats will not support any proposal that would provide hundreds of billions of dollars to Iran, sharply criticising President Donald Trump over the issue.
In a statement, Schumer said that if Trump wants to send what he described as “hundreds of billions of dollars” to Iran, he would have to secure the necessary votes from members of his own party.
“Democrats will not help send $300 billion to Iran,” Schumer said, rejecting any suggestion that his party would back such a move.
The Senate Democratic leader also launched a broader attack on the president’s leadership, arguing that the United States was in a worse position because of what he called Trump’s incompetence, personal ego and unwillingness to listen to or accept facts.
The remarks highlight growing political divisions in Washington over US policy towards Iran and any potential financial arrangements linked to diplomatic negotiations or regional security efforts.
Schumer’s comments come amid continued debate in Congress over the Trump administration’s approach to foreign policy and its handling of relations with Tehran.
