Israeli strikes hit south Lebanon after ceasefire

Published on: June 20, 2026 7:29 PM

At least five people were killed in Israeli air and drone strikes in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese state media. The attacks occurred shortly after a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect. The incident raises concerns about the stability of the newly announced truce.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes and drones targeted several areas in the Nabatieh region overnight and into Saturday morning. Residential buildings and homes were destroyed during the strikes. Israeli artillery also shelled Nabatieh and surrounding areas before dawn, causing further damage and casualties.

The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah was reached on Friday following weeks of escalating cross-border violence. A US official confirmed the truce was set to begin at 4 p.m. local time. The agreement was also acknowledged by a senior Israeli official and sources within Hezbollah, according to Reuters.

Despite the announcement, the renewed strikes highlight ongoing tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border. The attacks came just hours after both sides agreed to halt hostilities. The situation underscores the fragility of ceasefire arrangements in the region.

The latest escalation adds to a broader cycle of regional conflict involving Israel and armed groups in Lebanon. Authorities have warned that continued violations could threaten efforts to stabilize the border area and protect civilian populations.
