Nine remain critical after deadly Bedford train collision

Published on: June 21, 2026 5:54 PM

Nine people remain in critical condition following a fatal train collision near Bedford, approximately 100 kilometres north of London, where two passenger services heading toward the capital crashed on Friday evening. The accident claimed the life of one train driver and left dozens of passengers requiring urgent medical treatment.

The collision occurred at around 5:15pm local time when two trains travelling toward London became involved in a serious crash. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, where rescue teams worked to assist injured passengers and secure the affected railway line.

According to police officials, more than 80 people received hospital treatment during the night after the incident. By Saturday morning, 28 passengers remained hospitalized, while nine were still in critical condition as doctors continued providing intensive care and monitoring their recovery.

Meanwhile, eyewitness accounts described a sudden and violent impact that left passengers shaken and injured. Several travellers reportedly suffered fractures and other serious injuries, while images from the scene showed significant damage to the front section of one train following the collision.

Investigators have launched a comprehensive inquiry to determine the exact cause of the crash. Early footage and passenger accounts suggest one train may have struck the rear of another service, although authorities have not yet confirmed the sequence of events leading to the accident.

The tragedy prompted condolences from senior British leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles. Both expressed sympathy for the family of the deceased driver and those affected, while officials pledged a thorough investigation to improve railway safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
