Six killed in shooting at youth welfare centre in Germany's Stade | News | Al Jazeera

Six people were killed in a shooting at a youth welfare centre in northern Germany, while police arrested two individuals, including the suspected gunman, as investigations into the attack continue.

According to German authorities, the shooting occurred in the city of Stade when an armed man allegedly opened fire inside a youth welfare facility, causing panic among staff and visitors. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire and secured the area shortly afterwards.

Police said five victims died at the scene, while another person succumbed to injuries while being transported to hospital. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims, and no details have been provided regarding their ages or relationship to the facility.

Authorities confirmed that two people have been taken into custody, including the suspected attacker. Investigators are questioning those detained to determine the motive behind the shooting and whether anyone else may have been involved.

A large police presence remained at the scene as forensic teams collected evidence and examined the building. Officers also interviewed witnesses in an effort to establish the sequence of events leading up to the attack.

Police have not disclosed whether the suspect had any prior connection to the youth welfare centre or whether the victims were specifically targeted. Officials said there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to the public, but investigations remain in the early stages.

The shooting has shocked the local community, where such incidents are relatively uncommon. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation while investigators work to establish the facts surrounding the case.

Counselling and support services are expected to be offered to survivors, witnesses and families affected by the tragedy. German police said further information will be released as the investigation progresses and more details become available.

The incident is the latest fatal shooting to draw attention to public safety concerns, with authorities focusing on uncovering the motive and circumstances behind the deadly attack.
