VANCOUVER: Switzerland secured their place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday, producing a disciplined display that combined defensive organisation with clinical finishing.
Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the perfect start by opening the scoring in the 10th minute after a swift counterattack. Winning possession in their own half, the Swiss launched a rapid move down the left through 20-year-old Johan Manzambi, whose low cross found Embolo for a simple close-range finish.
Head coach Murat Yakin’s tactical approach proved decisive against Algeria, managed by former Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic. After taking the lead, the Swiss shifted into a compact five-man midfield, limiting Algeria’s attacking options and forcing their opponents to search for openings that rarely appeared.
Algeria’s best opportunity came in first-half stoppage time when Ibrahim Maza fired a shot wide of the near post. Despite enjoying spells of possession, the North Africans struggled to create clear-cut chances against Switzerland’s disciplined defensive structure.
Switzerland doubled their advantage shortly after the restart. A move down the right ended with an attempted clearance falling kindly to Dan Ndoye, who calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Luca Zidane to make it 2-0 and leave Algeria with a mountain to climb.
Captain Riyad Mahrez had a chance to reduce the deficit moments later but failed to beat the Swiss defence from a promising central position. Switzerland then reverted to their counterattacking strategy, with captain Granit Xhaka controlling the team’s shape and tempo as Algeria found it difficult to mount a comeback.
Substitute Fabian Rieder missed a late opportunity to extend the lead after miscuing his effort with the goal at his mercy, but the miss had no impact on the outcome.
Switzerland will now return to Vancouver for a last-16 encounter next week, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana as they continue their FIFA World Cup campaign.
