Iran rejects Trump’s Hormuz control proposal

Published on: July 13, 2026 8:49 PM

Iran’s military on Monday warned it would respond forcefully to any activity in the Strait of Hormuz conducted without Tehran’s approval following comments by US President Donald Trump. The warning came after Trump suggested the United States should control and oversee the strategic waterway. The exchange has intensified tensions in the Gulf and raised fresh concerns over global energy security.

In an official statement, the Iranian military said it would never allow the United States to interfere in the Strait of Hormuz. It warned that any activity carried out without Iran’s consent would face an extremely severe response. The military also stressed that Tehran considers the strategic waterway a vital part of its national security interests.

Iran further warned regional countries against supporting or assisting any US operations in the Strait of Hormuz. It said backing Washington would be regarded as participation in military action against Iran. Officials also cautioned that any escalation could spread across the region, placing full responsibility on the United States and its allies.

The warning followed Trump’s remarks that Washington would likely take control of the Strait of Hormuz and become its guardian. He said the United States should be compensated for protecting the vital shipping route and accused Iran of violating previous agreements. Trump also claimed US forces had launched heavy strikes against Iranian targets.

The Strait of Hormuz carries a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports, making it one of the most strategically important maritime routes. Any disruption or military confrontation in the area could affect global energy markets, shipping, and regional stability. The latest statements reflect the continuing deterioration in relations between Tehran and Washington.
