Security forces foil suicide attack, destroy explosive-laden vehicle in Wana

Published on: July 18, 2026 3:50 PM

Pakistan’s security forces foiled a major terrorist plot in Wana, Lower South Waziristan, after destroying an explosives-laden vehicle intended for a suicide attack during a timely intelligence-based operation.

According to state media, the operation was carried out after security agencies received intelligence about an imminent attack. The explosive-filled vehicle was intercepted and destroyed before it could reach its target, preventing what officials described as a potentially devastating incident.

Security sources said one terrorist was killed, while five others were injured during the operation. Authorities said the successful action prevented significant civilian casualties and ensured the safety of residents in Wana and nearby areas.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the security forces for their swift response and professionalism. In a statement, he said the operation saved the people of Wana and surrounding areas from possible destruction. He added that security personnel successfully destroyed both an explosive-laden vehicle and a motorcycle before they could be used in the planned attack.

The latest operation comes just days after security forces foiled another attempted suicide attack on a military post in the Kari Kot area of Wana. In that incident, four terrorists were killed after attempting to ram an explosives-filled vehicle into a security installation.

Lower South Waziristan and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have continued to face security challenges despite ongoing counterterrorism operations. Authorities say intelligence-based operations remain a key part of efforts to dismantle militant networks and prevent attacks before they occur.

According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), terrorist attacks in the former tribal districts declined from 22 in May to 17 in June, marking a 23% decrease. However, the rest of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 37 attacks in June, up from 32 in May, reflecting a 16% increase.

Security forces have reiterated their commitment to continuing operations against militant groups to safeguard civilians and maintain peace across the region.
