Historic moment: Robert Prevost becomes first American Pope

Published on: May 8, 2025 11:43 PM

In a landmark moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected the new Pope. After at least four rounds of secret voting by the College of Cardinals, he was chosen to lead the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics. He will now be known as Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo XIV makes history as the first-ever American Pope. His election signals a significant shift in the global Church, showing a move toward more diverse and international leadership. The decision has been welcomed by many as a reflection of the Church’s expanding presence beyond Europe.

Born in the United States, Robert Prevost served as a missionary and bishop in Peru from 2015 to 2023, where he was praised for his work with poor communities and his efforts to promote peace and social justice. He became a Cardinal in 2023, and his deep roots in Latin America give him a unique global perspective.

The 69-year-old Pope now becomes the 267th leader of the Catholic Church, taking over after Pope Francis, who resigned due to health concerns. Many faithful around the world see Pope Leo XIV as a humble, wise, and balanced leader, capable of guiding the Church through modern challenges while staying true to its core values.

Meanwhile, global leaders have responded to the news. Former U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated the new Pope and called it a proud moment for America. He also expressed a desire to meet Pope Leo XIV, saying it was an “honor to witness this historic first.”
