Australia and South Africa enter thrilling phase in world test championship final

Published on: June 13, 2025 3:49 PM

The World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa has entered a highly exciting and tense phase at Lord’s Cricket Ground. On the second day, Australia scored 144 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their second innings. This strong batting effort increased their overall lead to 218 runs over South Africa, keeping the contest wide open.

South Africa had earlier been dismissed for 138 runs in their first innings, trailing Australia’s initial total of 212 by 74 runs. The match saw intense bowling battles as 14 wickets fell on the second day alone, with bowlers largely dominating the proceedings. The pitch offered assistance to the bowlers, making batting challenging for both teams.

South African batsmen tried to improve their overnight score of 43 for 4 but struggled against some sharp bowling from Australia’s captain Pat Cummins. Cummins took six crucial wickets, dismantling South Africa’s batting lineup. Despite his efforts, batsmen like Zubayr Hamza (45) and captain Temba Bavuma (36) made important contributions for South Africa.

Australia started their second innings with a 74-run lead but lost wickets quickly due to disciplined South African bowling. At one stage, seven Australian batsmen were dismissed for just 73 runs, putting pressure on their batting order. However, they fought back towards the end of the day to stabilize their innings.

Alex Carey was Australia’s top scorer with 43 runs, showing solid technique under pressure. Mitchell Starc remained unbeaten on 16, while Nathan Lyon was not out on 1. Australia’s overall lead now stands at 218 runs, setting up a thrilling battle as both teams push hard for victory in this prestigious final.
