New Zealand stuns Pakistan 4-3 in FIH nations cup comeback thriller

Published on: June 18, 2025 6:25 PM

In a gripping encounter at the FIH Nations Cup 2025, New Zealand pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat Pakistan 4-3, securing the top spot in Pool B. The match took place on Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and kept fans on edge until the final whistle.

Pakistan entered the third quarter with a strong 3-1 lead after goals from Abdul Rehman (2) and Rana Waheed Ashraf. The Green Shirts looked in control and displayed solid defense through the first half of the match.

However, New Zealand’s Scott Cosslett turned the game on its head. He scored twice in the third quarter to level the match, before netting the winning goal in the final quarter to complete his hat-trick and break Pakistan’s momentum.

Despite Pakistan’s earlier victory over Japan and a draw with hosts Malaysia, this defeat means they now sit second in Pool B with four points from three matches. The team still has a chance to qualify for the semi-finals depending on the outcome of the final group fixture between Malaysia and Japan.

The thrilling nature of the contest and New Zealand’s unbeaten streak have made them strong contenders for the title, while Pakistan must now rely on other results to keep their tournament hopes alive.
