The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from 1st to 10th Muharram to maintain law and order during the holy month. The decision was made in light of security concerns related to Muharram processions and gatherings.
According to the Punjab Home Department, no new processions or majalis (religious gatherings) will be allowed beyond those already approved. Public display of weapons and flammable materials without permission is strictly prohibited during this period.
The order also bans any form of provocative slogans, gestures, or speeches that may incite religious or sectarian hatred. Statements promoting sectarian or ethnic violence in any manner are forbidden under Section 144.
People are also prohibited from gathering on rooftops or near procession routes with items like stones, bricks, bottles, or garbage. Watching from rooftops or shopfronts during processions is also banned to prevent any untoward incidents.
Additionally, a ban on pillion riding will be enforced on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. However, senior citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel will be exempt from this restriction. All other measures will remain in effect throughout the first ten days of Muharram.
