NAB recovers Rs2 billion in public health dept fraud case

Published on: June 21, 2025 2:03 PM

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has recovered Rs2 billion in a major corruption case involving the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) in Sheikhupura. The case was launched in September 2024 after officials were found to have issued fake cheques worth around Rs5 billion.

The first recovered amount was formally handed over to Punjab’s Additional Secretary of Finance, Khalid Mehmood, at NAB Lahore. The recovery came after several accused admitted guilt and agreed to plea bargains. NAB then deposited the recovered funds into the national treasury after court approval.

NAB Lahore Director General Ghulam Safdar Shah praised the investigation team. He said the quick recovery shows the team’s commitment and efficiency. He also confirmed that investigations are still ongoing against other people involved in the scam.

In addition to recovering funds, NAB is also seizing and auctioning the assets of the accused. A public auction was held in Lahore on Friday, and more auctions are planned across Punjab. The goal is to return stolen money and assets to the public.

DG NAB Shah assured that the bureau will continue acting against corruption at all levels. He said NAB’s top priority is to deliver justice and provide fast relief to victims of financial fraud.
