Punjab seizes 13 lions in illegal wildlife crackdown, 5 people arrested

Published on: July 5, 2025 2:23 PM

The Punjab Wildlife Department launched a major crackdown against people keeping lions without a license. This action was taken on the special orders of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Officials inspected 22 locations across Punjab within 24 hours. They seized 13 lions and arrested five individuals. The department also filed five cases, with two more in progress.

The operation covered multiple cities including Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan. In Lahore, officials recovered four lions and arrested four people. They also sealed one illegal enclosure and filed three FIRs. Gujranwala officers seized four lions and began legal action. Faisalabad and Multan reported lion recoveries and filed multiple cases as well.

Officials said illegal lion ownership is a serious crime. It also poses a big danger to people living nearby. The Wildlife Department stated that no one can keep wild animals without proper documents. They warned that strong legal action will be taken. Safety of both animals and people is their top priority.

Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb supported the crackdown. She said illegal wildlife trade will not be allowed at any cost. She urged citizens to report such cases. People can call the government helpline 1107 for this purpose. The government has adopted a strict zero-tolerance policy.

The recent crackdown shows rising concern over keeping exotic pets in homes. Lions and other wild animals need special care and safety. The government now aims to end this trend. Officials said the law will treat all offenders equally. They promised to continue operations without any favoritism.
