As power tariffs continue to rise in Pakistan, actor Naumaan Ijaz voiced strong disapproval over increasing electricity bills, calling for relief for ordinary citizens already burdened by inflation.
Amid widespread complaints, Naumaan took to social media to express his frustration over the recent tariff changes announced by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). He sarcastically criticized the government’s pricing structure, urging it to end the injustice around the 200-unit category.
The new tariff rates propose Rs 10.54 per unit for usage up to 100 units, Rs 13 per unit for 101 to 200 units, and Rs 22.44 per unit for non-protected consumers. Above 200 units, rates vary from Rs 28.91 to Rs 47.69, depending on total usage.
Naumaan highlighted the daily struggle of ordinary citizens in the scorching heat, saying, “A poor man keeps staring at the meter, then at the sun, and finally at his children.” His words struck a chord with thousands online who face the same hardship.
He went on to plead with the authorities, writing, “Have mercy on the common man. End this 200-unit mafia once and for all.” His comments echoed the sentiments of many who feel trapped by the rising cost of living and inadequate electricity supply.
NEPRA’s proposed rates will only take effect after government approval. Until then, public criticism continues to grow as citizens and celebrities alike call for fair energy reforms and relief in this intense summer heat.
