ByteDance is developing a new TikTok app exclusively for the US market, according to a recent report by The Information. This move aims to bypass an impending US ban on the original TikTok app amid national security concerns. The new app will serve as a replacement and is designed to comply with US regulations.
Named “M2,” the new app is expected to launch in September 2025. After its rollout, users will be gradually shifted from the current TikTok app, referred to as “M,” to this new version. The original TikTok app will be completely shut down in the US by March 2026, ending its presence in the country.
This step follows multiple deadlines set by US President Donald Trump, who gave ByteDance until September 17 to sell TikTok’s US operations. The US government has expressed concerns over data privacy and potential Chinese government influence through ByteDance.
While the new app could allow ByteDance to continue operating in the US, its launch depends on permission from the Chinese government. Meanwhile, reports say a group of US investors is close to acquiring TikTok’s US operations, with ByteDance retaining a minor stake under the new administration.
