ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court has dismissed former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry’s request to stop trial proceedings in multiple cases linked to the May 9 incidents. The court advised him to approach the Lahore High Court (LHC) instead.
Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, heading the bench, firmly stated, “Be thankful the courts are functioning,” after hearing arguments from both sides. The court made it clear that only the High Court has the authority to issue a stay on such proceedings.
Fawad Chaudhry, who is facing several cases across different districts, sought consolidation of the cases and a temporary halt to the trials. However, the apex court noted that the LHC had already granted him exemption from personal appearance and instructed him to pursue his plea there.
Special Prosecutor Zulfiqar Naqvi argued that the LHC dismissed the case without addressing it on merit, and no formal order was issued on objections raised by the Registrar’s Office. He maintained that the Supreme Court should intervene due to procedural flaws.
Even though Fawad complained about lengthy trial sessions continuing till midnight, the Chief Justice reiterated, “Be grateful the courts are working.” The court emphasized that any ruling from the Supreme Court could affect all parties, so the matter is best handled by the LHC.
In conclusion, the Supreme Court not only rejected Fawad Chaudhry’s plea for halting the trials but also clarified that the High Court remains the appropriate forum for addressing such legal concerns.
