Moderate flood alert at Chashma as Indus river swells: PDMA

Published on: July 10, 2025 11:38 PM

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a flood alert for the Indus River at Chashma, warning of moderate flooding due to rapidly increasing water levels. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as inflows and outflows continue to rise.

As of Thursday, the Chashma Barrage recorded an inflow of 390,000 cusecs and an outflow of 370,000 cusecs, indicating growing pressure and potential downstream risk. PDMA officials cautioned that water levels may further increase due to ongoing upstream inflows and potential monsoon rains.

In addition to Chashma, low-level flooding has been reported at Tarbela, Kalabagh, and Taunsa, signaling a broader regional concern. The PDMA has alerted commissioners in Sargodha, D.G. Khan, and Bahawalpur divisions, urging them to remain vigilant and coordinate flood response activities.

Moreover, Deputy Commissioners of seven high-risk districts — Mianwali, Bhakkar, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan — have been formally alerted. Emergency services including Rescue 1122 have been directed to pre-position personnel, equipment, and boats in vulnerable areas to ensure timely evacuation if necessary.

To strengthen preparedness, the PDMA has also issued advisories to departments of Local Government, Agriculture, Irrigation, Health, Forests, Livestock, and Transport, instructing them to activate contingency plans and remain on standby.

The PDMA urged citizens living near riverbanks and low-lying areas to stay informed through official channels and follow all safety instructions. As monsoon activity intensifies, provincial authorities are working to prevent loss of life and ensure rapid response in case of emergency.
