The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The alert follows weather forecasts predicting heavy rainfall from July 28 to July 31. Areas including Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, and Shigar are expected to receive intense rainfall. In AJK, the regions of Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and Bagh may also experience strong downpours during this period.
NDMA warned that the combination of heavy rainfall and melting glaciers could increase the risk of flash floods and landslides. The Chitral River, particularly near the towns of Booni and Reshun, may see a surge in water levels due to glacier runoff. In urban areas like Muzaffarabad and Bagh, stormwater drainage systems may be overwhelmed, leading to flooding in low-lying zones.
The authority has urged local communities to stay alert, especially those living near rivers, slopes, and mountainous passes. Landslide-prone regions could face road closures and disruptions to transport and communication. Travelers and tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement in affected regions until conditions improve.
To minimize damage and ensure quick response, NDMA has directed all relevant departments to prepare in advance. Emergency teams, rescue personnel, and machinery must remain on standby. Local administrations have also been told to activate early warning systems and keep the public informed through regular updates.
Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and district governments are coordinating efforts to monitor the situation closely. NDMA stressed the importance of timely action, urging officials to ensure food supplies, shelter, and medical support are ready for any possible evacuations.
