The National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) has issued a warning about possible floods in northern and central Pakistan. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), heavy rains are expected from August 5 to 10. These rains may cause flooding in many areas, especially near major rivers. The report highlights increased water levels and risks for several key regions. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and take precautions.
The report warns that the Chenab River near Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad may face moderate to high-level flooding. Similarly, the Jhelum River near upper Mangla is also at risk of medium to high flooding. The Kabul River near Nowshera could experience fast-flowing water. Additionally, streams in Swat and Panjkora may overflow and cause flash floods. These conditions could threaten communities in these river basins.
Furthermore, the NDMA report says water flow will likely rise to medium levels at major dams like Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa, and Guddu. In Gilgit-Baltistan, the Hunza and Shigar rivers might see increased flows. Streams such as Hisper, Khunjerab, Shamshal, Braldo, Hushe, and Saltoro are also expected to flood. This situation raises concerns about flash floods and landslides in hilly areas.
The warning also includes districts in Balochistan, such as Musakhel, Sherani, Zhob, and Sibi, where streams may flood. Currently, Tarbela Dam is 90% full, and Mangla Dam is 60% full due to ongoing monsoon rains. These water levels increase the risk of downstream flooding if rains continue heavily. NDMA advises strict monitoring and readiness to respond quickly.
