Wasim Akram backs Babar Azam’s return for Asia Cup t20 squad

Published on: August 7, 2025 6:44 PM

Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram has backed Babar Azam’s comeback to Pakistan’s T20 team for the 2025 Asia Cup. He shared his views in a recent interview with Cricket Pakistan, saying Babar’s experience and class are much needed. Akram said Pakistan will need a senior batter for both the Asia Cup and the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Akram reminded fans of Babar’s explosive 2019 performance for Somerset in county cricket. He scored runs at nearly a 150 strike rate, proving he can adapt when needed. “He knows how to change his game based on match conditions. That’s what makes him a top-class player,” Akram said. He believes Babar’s smart batting and calm presence are assets in pressure matches.

The former skipper suggested that Babar should bat at number three. “That’s the best spot for him,” Akram said, though he added the final decision depends on the match situation. “If more overs remain, others can open. But Babar at number three gives balance and control,” he explained.

Akram also said Babar plays a key role in guiding the team during chases, especially against strong opponents. “When chasing 140 or 160 runs, you need someone steady to hold the innings together,” he said. “Babar takes responsibility and carries the team forward. He’s done it before and can do it again.”

Babar last played a T20 International in December 2024 against South Africa. He scored 236 runs in his final 10 innings but didn’t hit a single fifty. Critics pointed to his strike rate as the reason for his exclusion. However, with Fakhar Zaman injured, fans and experts are calling for Babar’s return. Akram believes Babar still has plenty to offer and should be backed by everyone.
