Pakistan, the three-time Asia Cup hockey champions, has decided not to participate in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in Bihar, India, citing serious security concerns after months of heightened tensions. The Pakistan Hockey Federation officially informed the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) about its decision, which also means missing out on the opportunity to qualify for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026.
As a result of this decision, Bangladesh has been included in Group B to replace Pakistan, ensuring the tournament continues as planned. Moreover, changes were also required in Group A because Oman withdrew from the championship, leading to Kazakhstan stepping in to complete the line-up and maintain balance in the pools.
The Asian Hockey Federation released the revised schedule on August 19, confirming that the event will now run from August 29 to September 7 in Rajgir, Bihar. The opening matches will feature defending champions Korea against Chinese Taipei, followed by hosts India facing China in what is expected to be a high-energy clash in front of a passionate crowd.
The AHF confirmed that the participating nations are divided into two groups, with Pool A consisting of India, Japan, China, and Kazakhstan, while Pool B includes Malaysia, Korea, Bangladesh, and Chinese Taipei. The pool stage will be followed by the Super4s, leading to the Final on September 7 between the top two sides, with the champion securing a place in the 2026 World Cup.
Highlighting the importance of the event, AHF President Fumio Ogura said the Asia Cup Rajgir Bihar 2025 would showcase the very best of Asian hockey. He added that with World Cup qualification on the line, every match will carry tremendous importance, while also promising thrilling competition and a lasting legacy for the sport across Asia.
