Floods submerge historic Sikh shrine Kartarpur

Published on: August 27, 2025 12:21 PM

In Narowal, a breach in the River Ravi’s embankment caused severe flooding, submerging the sacred Kartarpur Sahib complex. The sudden surge of water has left the historic site under several feet of water, creating widespread devastation in the area.

The revered Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, one of Sikhism’s holiest sites, is now flooded with water levels reaching five to six feet. The inundation has made movement inside the shrine extremely difficult, affecting daily rituals and religious activities.

Floodwaters have also spread across Shakargarh Road, with water rising up to five feet. This has disrupted local travel and transportation, isolating nearby communities and complicating relief efforts by authorities and emergency teams.

Kartarpur Sahib holds immense spiritual importance as it stands on the site where Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism, lived after his missionary travels until his death in 1539. Pilgrims worldwide regard it as a place of deep religious significance.

The shrine is considered among the most sacred in Sikhism, alongside the Golden Temple in Amritsar and Gurdwara Janam Asthan in Nankana Sahib. Its proximity to the Pakistan-India border makes it a symbol of spiritual unity and cultural heritage.

Kartarpur Sahib is also famous for the Kartarpur Corridor, inaugurated in 2019, allowing Indian Sikh pilgrims visa-free access. The flooding of this historic and spiritually significant site has sparked widespread concern among devotees and religious communities globally.
