Lahore experienced severe monsoon rains on Saturday, causing widespread destruction and resulting in the deaths of at least six people. The downpour, described as the heaviest of the season so far, submerged major roads, caused roof collapses, and triggered lightning strikes. Local authorities confirmed that infrastructure was overwhelmed, with key roads flooded and traffic brought to a standstill.
Two fatalities occurred in Lahore’s Kahna area when lightning struck, also injuring two others. Rescue teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. In Old Anarkali, a man was killed when the roof of a mud house collapsed due to the heavy rainfall. Urban Search and Rescue teams spent hours removing debris to recover his body.
In another tragic incident, three people died and four others were injured when the roof of a house caved in on Bedian Road. Rescue teams retrieved the injured and rushed them to local hospitals. These fatalities add to the growing list of victims from the torrential downpours that have plagued the city.
The rains also wreaked havoc on Lahore’s infrastructure, flooding major roads such as Johar Town, Wapda Town, and Canal Road. Vehicles were stuck in the water, and traffic jams crippled the city’s movement. Many areas reported power outages and waterlogging, leaving residents describing the city as “paralyzed” under the weight of the monsoon.
According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), areas like Nishtar Town, Chowk Nakhda, and Tajpura recorded the heaviest rainfall, with over 100mm in several areas. The Meteorological Department has warned that the current monsoon spell will continue intermittently for the next 24 hours, with additional rainfall expected in the coming days, raising fears of further flooding.
