PMD alerts Karachi: Heavy rainfall and flooding likely next week

Published on: September 2, 2025 3:54 PM

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in Sindh, including Karachi, beginning this weekend. A low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is expected to affect Sindh from September 7 to 11. The Met Office warned that this system could bring significant rainfall to Karachi during that period.

Heavy rain could trigger urban flooding in Karachi, the PMD said. Last month’s heavy rains caused severe flooding, power outages lasting up to 48 hours, and damaged roads filled with water. Citizens faced major disruptions due to traffic congestion and waterlogged streets. The department added that there is no chance of heavy rain in Karachi until September 5.

Meanwhile, torrential monsoon rains continue to batter Punjab, worsening floods caused by water released from Indian dams. Islamabad and Rawalpindi also faced heavy rain recently, flooding streets and blocking traffic. Several roads turned into ponds, leaving vehicles stranded and disrupting daily life.

Authorities urge residents to prepare for potential flooding and stay alert for updates from the PMD. The government is monitoring the situation closely to provide timely assistance where needed. Urban flooding remains a major concern due to Karachi’s drainage challenges during heavy rainfalls.

In summary, while Karachi may avoid heavy rain until early September, the expected Bay of Bengal system could cause widespread rain and flooding. Citizens and officials alike must stay vigilant to minimize damage and disruption. The PMD continues to monitor weather patterns closely.
