Maryam Nawaz visits flood victims, launches Sahiwal buses

Published on: September 22, 2025 3:37 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Monday visited Bahawalnagar to meet flood-affected families and later inaugurated an electric bus service in Sahiwal. At a women’s camp in Bahawalnagar, she spent time with women using sewing machines for livelihood projects, even trying some stitching herself. She also interacted warmly with children affected by floods, expressing care and support for their recovery. Her visit aimed to highlight the government’s commitment to both disaster relief and long-term development.

After sharing a meal with the flood victims, Maryam Nawaz travelled to Sahiwal to launch the city’s new electric bus service, following its earlier rollout in Sargodha. Speaking at the inauguration, she told the youth that the bus service is completely free for them, reflecting her government’s dedication to easing mobility challenges. She also pointed out that a special ramp has been built on each bus to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities, promoting inclusive transportation.

Maryam Nawaz emphasised that providing high-quality transport facilities across Punjab remains a key priority for her administration. She announced that thirty modern electric buses have been allocated for Sahiwal, with a nominal fare of just Rs20 for regular passengers. Persons with disabilities, women, senior citizens, and students will be able to travel free of charge. This approach, she explained, seeks to make public transport affordable and dignified for all communities, especially vulnerable groups.

She further highlighted that the buses are equipped with modern amenities such as charging ports and Wi-Fi facilities to ensure passenger convenience. Maryam stated that women will now be able to travel with dignity and safety, a step forward in empowering women across Punjab. Introducing electric buses in smaller cities, she added, will also contribute to environmentally friendly transport solutions while improving the overall quality of life for local residents.

During her speech, Maryam Nawaz remarked that signs of progress from Nawaz Sharif’s era could still be seen across the country. She underscored her government’s determination to build on that legacy through innovative projects like the electric bus service. The chief minister reaffirmed that the Punjab government remains committed to addressing the needs of its citizens by combining social welfare efforts, such as flood relief, with sustainable development initiatives.
