Punjab rolls out free electric bus rides for women and seniors

Published on: September 22, 2025 3:53 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz launched an electric bus service in Sahiwal with fares set at just Rs20. She said the buses were warmly welcomed, with people comparing the moment to Eid celebrations. This new service aims to provide dignified, affordable travel for residents.

Maryam Nawaz announced that women, students, senior citizens, and people with disabilities will travel free on these buses. She described the project as part of her vision for modern and inclusive public transport across Punjab. The initiative also supports environmental goals by reducing pollution and cutting fuel costs.

At the launch event, the Chief Minister shared stories of the public’s love and support. She recounted how people chanted slogans in her favor and named newborns after her and her family. Maryam Nawaz also highlighted Pakistan’s growing international respect, linking it to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Saudi Arabia.

Officials said the new bus service will help thousands of daily commuters, especially workers and students, by making travel affordable and convenient. Parents appreciated free travel for children and students, while seniors called the initiative a “lifeline” for those on limited incomes.

The electric bus launch is part of a larger plan to modernize Punjab’s public transport. Similar projects are planned for other cities to create a cleaner, more accessible transit system for all residents.
