UAE urges Gaza ceasefire in Netanyahu meeting

The UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the UN General Assembly in New York. During the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah stressed the urgent need to end the Gaza war. This marked Netanyahu’s first meeting with a senior Arab official since Israel’s recent attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar. The UAE strongly condemned that attack and protested by summoning Israel’s deputy ambassador.

The UAE signed the Abraham Accords with Israel in 2020, which normalized relations and boosted economic and security cooperation. Sheikh Abdullah reaffirmed the UAE’s firm commitment to peace efforts based on a two-state solution. He said peace must respect the hopes of Palestinian and Israeli peoples. The meeting highlighted the UAE’s continued support for diplomacy despite regional tensions.

However, the Abraham Accords face challenges due to  Israeli policies in the region. The UAE warned that any annexation of West Bank land would be a “red line” for Abu Dhabi. The UAE threatened to downgrade diplomatic ties if Israel annexes parts or all of the West Bank. This warning raised concerns over the future of UAE-Israel relations.

Recently, several Western countries recognized Palestine as a state to promote the two-state solution. This move angered Israel, whose government rejected the idea of a Palestinian state. Netanyahu sharply criticized these Western nations for their decision. The issue adds more complexity to the peace process in the region.

Overall, the meeting between UAE and Israeli leaders showed ongoing tensions and hopes for peace. Both sides face pressure to resolve conflicts and support stability. The world watches closely as regional diplomacy continues amid conflict.
