Pakistan steady in first Test against South Africa at Lahore

LAHORE – Pakistan made a strong recovery after an early blow on the first morning of the Lahore Test against South Africa, reaching 107 for 1 at the lunch break.

Opener Abdullah Shafique was dismissed for just 2 runs on the third ball of the match, trapped lbw by Kagiso Rabada. But captain Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq steadied the innings with a solid partnership.

At lunch, Imam-ul-Haq remained unbeaten on 59, while Shan Masood was not out on 44.

Masood said after winning the toss that the newly renovated Gaddafi pitch was “a bit of an unknown,” but called the Test against world champions South Africa “a great opportunity.”

For South Africa, captain Aiden Markram said two key players were missing but the side was confident in its experience in subcontinental conditions.

Pakistan’s lineup includes Sajid Khan, returning after illness, while Asif Afridi missed out on his Test debut.
