The Punjab government has announced a province-wide ban on vehicles without green stickers starting November 15, in a decisive move to combat growing air pollution levels. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched an aggressive campaign to ensure that every vehicle on the road meets environmental standards. Officials have emphasized that this step is part of Punjab’s long-term plan to reduce smog and protect public health, particularly in Lahore where air quality continues to deteriorate each winter.

Director General Environment Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh stated that exhaust testing has now been made mandatory for all vehicles, both private and commercial. Only vehicles that pass the Exhaust Testing System (ETS) will receive the green sticker, allowing them to operate legally. Authorities have warned that vehicles without ETS certification or green stickers will be seized on the spot after the deadline. This marks one of the strictest anti-pollution drives ever launched in Punjab’s history.
Furthermore, the EPA has directed its inspection teams to conduct surprise roadside checks across major cities, including Lahore, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi. Mobile testing units have also been deployed to make it easier for citizens to get their vehicles tested and certified. The agency has urged citizens to act immediately rather than wait for the deadline, warning that enforcement will be uncompromising once the campaign enters its final phase.

In addition, Dr. Sheikh highlighted that vehicles emitting visible smoke or producing excessive noise will face immediate legal action under environmental protection laws. Repeat offenders may have their vehicles permanently impounded or face heavy fines. To ensure fairness, the EPA has partnered with local authorities and transport departments to streamline the verification and testing process. This collaborative approach aims to make compliance simple, transparent, and accessible for all vehicle owners.
The government believes that this initiative will significantly reduce smog during the winter season, when pollution levels typically rise due to industrial emissions and vehicular smoke. By enforcing these measures, Punjab hopes to protect millions from the harmful effects of air pollution and set a precedent for cleaner transportation. Citizens are therefore strongly advised to get their vehicles tested immediately, not only to avoid penalties but also to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.
