Sports Week to be held in colleges to promote co-curricular activities

The College Education Department, Government of Sindh, has decided to organize a “Sports Week” across all colleges in the province during the winter season to promote co-curricular activities among students. The decision was made during separate meetings of the Larkana and Mirpurkhas regions chaired by Secretary Colleges, Mr. Nadeem Memon. The meetings were attended by Director General Colleges Sindh Mr. Navaid Rab Siddiqui, Director Colleges Larkana Prof. Altaf Hussain Abro, Director Colleges Mirpurkhas, and other officials of the department. The participants reviewed the educational, administrative, and co-curricular status of colleges in both regions. Speaking at the meeting, Secretary Colleges Nadeem Memon emphasized that promoting co-curricular activities along with academic education is essential for students’ mental and physical growth.

He directed all regional directors to issue detailed schedules for sports activities during the winter season, including football, cricket, volleyball, badminton, athletics, table tennis, and other competitions. He further stated that sports and similar activities help students maintain mental and physical health while developing teamwork, discipline, and leadership qualities. Secretary Colleges also highlighted several key points: Teachers must guide students to reduce excessive screen time. Counseling sessions should be organized to help students address mental health challenges, And one class per day should be dedicated to library reading to promote a culture of study. Debates, essay writing, and dramatic performances should be encouraged to enhance students’ creativity.

Larkana Region

It was informed that the Larkana Region includes the districts of Larkana, Qamber Shahdadkot, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, and Kashmore-Kandhkot.

A total of 37 active colleges are functioning in the region, where 59,411 students are currently enrolled. Additionally, seven colleges are running four-year degree programs affiliated with Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur.

Mirpurkhas Region

The Mirpurkhas Region consists of the districts of Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, and Tharparkar. There are 33 active colleges in the region, with 38,761 students enrolled. Of these, 12 are male colleges, 12 female colleges, and 9 co-education institutions. Between 2020 and 2025, 15 new colleges have been established in the region. Moreover, six hostels under the management of the College Education Department are providing accommodation facilities to students and teachers from remote areas.
