Sindh Excise dept extends Ajrak number plates deadline to Dec 31
KARACHI: The Sindh Department of Excise and Taxation has extended the deadline for replacing vehicle number plates by two months. The previous deadline, which was set to expire today, has now been moved to December 31.

According to the official notification, citizens have been granted additional time to switch to the new security-featured number plates. The extension aims to provide convenience to vehicle owners amid growing public concerns and administrative delays.

The move follows directives from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who chaired a meeting with Sindh Excise and Taxation Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla. During the briefing, Bilawal was informed about the campaign for introducing modern plates equipped with security features designed to curb vehicle theft and improve monitoring.

Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla stated that these new plates will enhance law enforcement capabilities and help streamline tax collection. He also briefed Bilawal on the performance of PPP members in the Sindh Assembly and highlighted the Narcotics Department’s recent achievement of seizing drugs worth Rs7 billion.

The decision comes after weeks of public protests in Karachi against the Ajrak-design number plates and e-ticketing challans. While the initiative was launched to improve security and tax efficiency, many citizens have faced difficulties due to delays in issuance and strict enforcement measures.
