Sheikh Rashid files contempt petition over Umrah travel ban

Published on: November 7, 2025 12:14 PM

RAWALPINDI: Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has filed a petition for contempt of court after being prevented from traveling for Umrah despite a court order allowing him to do so. The petition was submitted to the Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi bench through his lawyer, Sardar Abdul Razzaq Khan.

Sheikh Rashid was scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia for the religious pilgrimage on November 6, but immigration authorities stopped him from boarding his flight at the airport. The former interior minister claimed that this action violated the court directive issued in his favor.

The Lahore High Court, through Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan, had previously granted Sheikh Rashid permission to perform Umrah, making the airport denial a matter of legal concern. The petition argues that blocking his travel constitutes contempt of the court’s order.

The LHC Rawalpindi bench is set to hear the petition on Monday, November 10. Legal observers will be watching closely, as the case raises questions about compliance with court directives and administrative procedures.
