The Met Gala has revealed its 2026 theme — a striking, minimalist declaration: costume art. Vogue announced the theme on Monday, confirming the event’s return to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with a concept that pays homage to the Costume Institute’s rich legacy.
According to Andrew Bolton, head curator of the Anna Wintour Costume Centre, the theme intentionally arrives without a subtitle for the first time. Speaking to CNN, he said the phrase anchors the Institute’s history and underscores fashion’s artistic legitimacy. “Fashion has the status of art because of, and not in spite of, its relation to the body,” Bolton noted.

The Gala will raise funds for the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition, which is set to explore the body’s centrality in fashion. Teen Vogue reports the exhibition will launch nearly 12,000 square feet of the new Condé Nast Galleries — The Met’s first-ever permanent fashion-dedicated space. The installation will blend paintings, sculptures, artefacts, and garments spanning 5,000 years of global art.

Bolton explained that the theme’s simplicity was deliberate — an effort to dissolve hierarchies between artworks and the human form. The exhibition aims to create an immersive equivalence between bodies, clothes, and artistic expression.
As tradition dictates, the official dress code and the list of co-chairs will be revealed closer to the event. Last year’s Gala featured Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams as co-chairs, with Anna Wintour returning alongside honorary chair LeBron James. Details for 2026 — including the highly anticipated guest list — remain under wraps until the first Monday of May.
