PM orders speedy, transparent PIA privatisation

Published on: November 21, 2025 10:24 AM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday directed authorities to expedite all phases of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) privatisation, stressing complete transparency in the process.

Chairing a meeting on the national flag carrier, the premier emphasised enhancing operational efficiency, increasing airworthy aircraft, and ensuring punctual flight departures. Officials briefed him on the privatisation plan, which aims to sell a 75 percent stake with management control while preserving PIA’s name and branding.

The Privatisation Commission has prequalified four parties for the transaction, including Fauji Fertiliser Company, Air Blue, and two consortia comprising major corporate groups. The government recently approved the inclusion of AKD Group Holdings in one consortium. The bidding phase is expected to commence soon.

Officials also informed the prime minister that PIA plans to expand its fleet from 18 to 38 airworthy aircraft by 2029 and increase service to over 40 cities from the current 30 destinations.

The meeting was attended by key federal ministers, advisers, and senior officials. Separately, the prime minister reviewed housing ministry matters and the country’s broader political situation.
