Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said Friday that he will wait until after the current NFL season to make a decision regarding his retirement. Kelce, a four-time All-Pro, emphasized that he intends to announce his decision early enough to allow the team ample time to plan for the future.
The NFL’s new league year begins on March 11, marking the start of free agency, but teams often prepare well in advance for potential roster changes ahead of the April draft. Kelce expressed his desire to provide the Chiefs with clarity on his plans so they can strategize effectively.

Kelce also mentioned that his brother, Eagles center Jason Kelce, influenced his approach. Jason retired after 13 seasons on March 4, 2024, allowing Philadelphia sufficient time to adjust their roster and make offseason plans. Travis said he wants to offer the same courtesy to Kansas City.
The veteran tight end spoke after the team’s final practice ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. While he did not give a definitive timeline for his decision, Kelce indicated that he is considering both his career and the team’s needs carefully.
As one of the NFL’s most productive tight ends, Kelce’s retirement decision will have major implications for the Chiefs’ offensive plans moving forward, particularly at a position central to quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ passing game.
