Google is testing a major upgrade that combines AI Overviews with AI Mode in its Search platform, allowing users to view AI-generated summaries and continue asking follow-up questions without switching tabs, which makes online searches smoother. This change is expected to improve how people look for information and interact with search results using natural language.
Previously, users had to choose between typing traditional queries or switching to AI Mode for deeper chat-style conversations powered by Gemini AI, but now Google aims to remove that friction entirely. With this new system, users can stay on the same page and still explore more detailed answers, which enhances accessibility.

Moreover, the company introduced AI Mode to U.S. users in May and expanded it globally in August, offering a ChatGPT-like experience directly within Search. As competition between major AI companies continues to grow, Google wants to keep users engaged by giving them faster responses and easier navigation, especially on mobile devices.
Robby Stein, Google’s VP of Product for Search, explained that people should not worry about where or how to ask questions, because the new tool creates a consistent experience. Additionally, this approach supports Google’s goal of making information discovery more intuitive and user-friendly across different types of queries.

Meanwhile, the upgrade arrives at a time when Gemini has already surpassed 650 million monthly users after recent model improvements, including enhancements to its Nano Banana image system. Therefore, merging AI Overviews with AI Mode could help expand Gemini’s reach further and offer a smoother search experience for millions of users worldwide.
