Russia welcomes Trump’s national security strategy

Published on: December 8, 2025 3:06 PM

Kremlin says new US security strategy accords largely with Russia's view

MOSCOW – The Kremlin on Sunday praised US President Donald Trump’s new national security strategy, marking one of the first times Moscow has openly supported such a policy document from Washington. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the strategy largely aligned with Russia’s own perceptions and priorities.

Trump’s strategy describes his approach as “flexible realism” and calls for a revival of the 19th century Monroe Doctrine, framing the Western Hemisphere as the United States’ sphere of influence. It also stresses Europe as a core US interest, emphasizes ending the war in Ukraine, and aims to restore strategic stability with Russia.

Kremlin Praises Trump Security Strategy as U.S. Shifts Global Alignment Towards Russia

Peskov called the US adjustments “encouraging,” particularly the document’s stance against perpetual NATO expansion. He cautioned, however, that elements within the US “deep state” might oppose Trump’s views, referring to a network of officials seen as resistant to his policies. Critics argue the concept of a “deep state” is largely conspiratorial.

Historically, US-Russia relations have fluctuated, from Cold War antagonism to post-Soviet cooperation on nuclear disarmament and counterterrorism. Since Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, US policy had largely branded Moscow as an aggressor. Peskov welcomed Trump’s strategy for framing cooperation on strategic stability rather than depicting Russia as a direct threat.

The strategy also highlights the Indo-Pacific as a critical economic and geopolitical area, focusing on preventing conflict with China over Taiwan. Russia has increasingly pivoted to Asia, especially China, following Western sanctions and efforts to reduce European reliance on Russian energy. Trump has emphasized that preventing a strategic alliance between Russia and China is a key priority for US foreign policy.

Experts say the document signals a potential recalibration in US-Russia relations but caution that longstanding tensions and global conflicts will continue to challenge any rapprochement.
