
A firefighter tragically died after being struck by a tree while battling bushfires north of Sydney, as authorities reported widespread destruction of homes and bushland across New South Wales and Tasmania.
Emergency crews responded to the rural town of Bulahdelah, about 200 km north of Sydney, where the 59-year-old suffered cardiac arrest after the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the bravery of emergency personnel, calling the tragedy a “sombre reminder” of the dangers faced daily by those protecting communities from natural disasters.
The bushfires destroyed 16 homes over the weekend in New South Wales’ Central Coast, affecting around 350,000 residents. Many families, like those in Koolewong, watched helplessly as flames consumed their properties and belongings.

In Tasmania, a 700-hectare fire at Dolphin Sands destroyed 19 homes and damaged 40 others. Authorities contained the blaze but cautioned residents not to return due to ongoing hazardous conditions.
Officials warned of a severe bushfire season ahead, with extreme heat expected across much of Australia. In New Zealand, firefighters are also battling a 110-hectare blaze near Tongariro National Park, prompting road closures and safety alerts.
